Gilera Runer 180, kickstart mod

Before:

After:

0825Image001

Previously I had chopped the center stand to allow me to start the bike with out having to haul it up onto the stand, and now that I’m using the kick start more I notice that it’s awkward, I’d like it closer to me while I stand there twisting the throttle and kicking, can’t do that so I chopped and welded it further around the shaft bringing it a bit higher and closer, not a bad job I’d say. we’ll see if it make a massive difference in the morning. Also I painted it black you may notice.

The auto choke, I noticed how much more crisp the throttle seems off the bottom end now, I can only summarize that it came on every time the bike was at idle, you see the battery I have is quite shagged and I’m to tight to buy a new one, so the voltage at idle is not high enough to turn the auto choke off, Haven’t used a tank of petrol yet hope I can get 160k out of a tank now.

Gilera Runner 180, auto choke fix

Auto choke on my phvb 20.5 carb, since I’m mostly doing short journeys right now, the auto choke is really ruining the fuel economy. I’m the type that worry’s about how much fuel cost’s. I’m also so tight I won’t pay for a manual choke kit.

0822Image000

Step one take it apart, Two chop a bit off the end of the spring, Three assemble as shown and, Four disconnect the wiring(temp sender one too). No more fecking auto choke. It’ll all go wrong in the morning (easystart to the rescue!)

0822Image001

Saved the original auto-choke and the temp sender just in case I need to put it all back, I only chopped up the bit from the spare runner.

Good news! got a free transalp 600! only killed two people! thanks pavel!

Good news! the price for the jago has gone down to 250, apparently the chassis in front of the struts is fecked! didn’t need that bit anyway!

Good news! theres no bad news at all! just wait abit though….

Gilera Runner 180, oil pump.

0726Image000

When I went to adjust the throttle slack, I had to do the oil pump cable as well, and I noticed that it wasn’t fully opening with the throttle wound back. So ignoring the marks that are meant to line up, I set her up to achieve full capacity when WOT, I think this is a good idea since the engine does ridiculously well on oil consumption, I feel much better now with the occasional whiff of burnt two stroke and blue haze leaving the traffic lights.

0723Image004

Got the urge to make a scale handling RC car after finding all this when I was moving house, got too many engines and not enough rear ends. Have all sorts of plans but first it looks like im gonna have to spend some money and get a steering rack and maybe a rear end diff.

0723Image000

Still broke right now even though I’m saving money with cheaper rent in my new place, so right now the exhaust for the starlet is waiting, an ep80 exhaust should do the job, but also for under €200 i could get 4-2-1 manifold made for a 5efe, might make more money back on the car if I get a proper exhaust.

0723Image001

Sold this triumph traveller for €20, go me! (don’t look ’em up on ebay)

0723Image002

This turned up, again we have no idea who what when or why, but it has a newly rebuilt head and a badly patched frame. I want it, convert it to single seater like the early 50’s and ride around pulling wheelies.

Runner is going fine, steve’s runner we got going the fine. shit just remembered have to go get him some bits off the runner 125.

Runner 180, 13″ front wheel.

0715Image000

This has a rev counter and it should fit into the space on the 180’s dash, it from an air cooled bike so it has no temp gauge but im sure i can bodge it in.

0715Image001

Spare NRG 13″ wheel, love to know what difference it would make to the handling. Both tyres are cracked and worn anyway so before i put new tyres on (12″ front) i’d like to know.

0715Image002

On the leak front seems the gasket sealant did the trick, was worried for a while but that turned out to be just some left over water escapeing, dry as a bone now.

0715Image003

Wrestled the 125’s rear handle thing off the scrap bike, no i didn’t clean it before i put it on.

Runner 180, O Ring.

0710Image002

It was just an O ring in the head (around the spark plug)! thank feck, spent a while trying to find a new one in town, before giveing up and smearing it with gasket sealent. then i remembered the 125 one might have done the job.

Probably gonna have to do it again now.

Leaking runner 180.

0709Image000

Runner seemed fine no problems, so i gave it a bit of tlc by sticking the plastics on.

0709Image001

fixed up the side bit with green zip ties, matching!

0710Image000

straight away it sprung a leak. bloody senstive italian.

0710Image001

And now i have to take all the plastics off again. grr. Leak seems to be coming from the skull gasket, but it’s also over heating so it’s probably the oil/water pump belt after snapping, just like steves one. except i drove it further with no oil 😀

0709Image002

Got sparks with the starlet engine! no we don’t know what we wired to what or why and it probably won’t work again after it’s solderd up.

Runner 180, resurrection.

0703Image000

Crashed it already. Thats not the first time that rack has claimed a bike, out braked and R1 and smashed it’s headlight last year too.

0703Image001

Fake carbon fiber levers i bought years ago and never fitted, cheap horrible things, don’t have brass liner in the pivots like the standard gilera fare.

0703Image002

Only real casualty of being in ditch for 2 years, perished fuel line, thank fuck i didn’t put on all the plastic before i found this leak.

0704Image000

I am positively itching to ride this thing. only two glitches happened, the temp sender fell off the head and the alternator plug (just ahead of the peg in that pic) fell out.

It is so hard to describe the difference between 2 and 4 stroke, I had to take slower back roads while running this engine in (new mains years ago) and the effortless feeling of just coasting along on minimal squirts of throttle makes it feels so torque-ie , limp four stokes need constant throttle to maintain speed. Already i am thinking of how to make a faster one 😀

Recipe for disaster.

Ingredients:

big crosser engine,  larger block of aluminium, snow mobile cvt transmisson.

Directions:

chop off crosser gearbox, keep primary drive gears for later. turn engine 180 degree’s and lay it exhaust port down, attach cvt trans to crank end and weld big block of aluminium to left crankcase side. drill holes for rear cvt auto clutch, mount that all up, you will notice that it’s running backwards if you stick a wheel on, so next step is to use the primary drive gears (you did save right?) to make a rear tranmission case.

actually scrap all that, if you mount the cvt onto the the primary gear layshaft (of the crosser) the speed increase will lower the torque going throught the cvt belt, makeing a boggo 180 cvt able to handle the power, need really light rollers though. and probably a new rear gearbox to change the speed of the rear wheel. hmm needs more (salt?) though.

Presentation:

Stuff into any 50cc moped and give the police the finger at every set of lights.

0626Image000

Fixed last tank leak, will be insured this friday 🙂 it’ll rain 🙁 also will be insured on the runner 180!

0626Image000

more little things done, vacuum hose’s sorted and tubes bunged up.
0626Image000

quick spray over where the petrol leaked through and destroyed the last coat of paint.
0626Image000

Fingers crossed this only needs a switch-able 12v supply to make the sparks appear!
0626Image000

if i had a few spare quid i’d just go and buy an ep80 down pipe to match the 4efe manifold, but i don’t, so some cuting and welding will be done.
0626Image000

red stuff is faster.

0627Image000

fuel pump from a kawasaki, will be making up a different mount point, i just shoved it in for the photo.

0627Image001

0627Image002

inside of distributor.

0701Image000

cat poked out of manifold.

got sort an exhaust gasket. and do tons of little things more. then it’s fingers crossed it starts okay.

Huge post

0311image000

Got to Teds first thing, Sean laid this thing on me,wanted me to weld a nut to the crank to get it apart, buggered the bolt i welded to it and then twice buggered the nut i welded to it and then the bolt again when i welded a lever to it. Not Gonna Budge.

0311image001

Fixed horrible throttle, made clutch work, but it’s not very nice.

0311image002

They are multiplying in there.

0311image003

A good shot.

Went for that drive on the bandit, carburation is all over the place was running on three for a while and wouldn’t pull cleanly at the top of the rev range, obviously no one jetted it up when that pipe was fitted.

List of shit thats wrong:

01.Brakes rusted solid. (Fixed)

02.Fork seal leaking

03.Horn broken

04.Choke lever broken (won’t bother fixing i think)

05.Clutch cable seized (Worked on all day, still FUBAR, update, it broke 🙁

06.Head bearings loose(Fixed and loads of grease added too)

07.Bent handlebars (Fixed, fourth set on it now)

08.Clutch switch broken( won’t bother with this either)

09.Clutch adjuster crushed (Fixed)

10.Indicator bulb missing

11.Tank needs repaint

12.Front tire needed (Fixed)

13.Rear tire need to be bedded in (Balled up rubber from a burnout still stuck to tire)

14.Scottoiler not working (Fixed)

15.Head Bearing lower needs grease (Fixed)

16.Kink in chain

17.New number plate

18. Find oil leaks

19.Oil is still all white

20.Oil throttle cable (Fixed)

21.Wheels need to be chemically cleaned

22.Whole bike need de-greaseing

23. I’m sure I’ll find some more. (in fact i did but i have forgotten them again)

All that was a couple of weeks ago, since then i have been busy fixing the garden up we need space for more garages lol.

0321image000

Saved this, gotta bring it back to the go kart track some day this summer. Obviously with out any sort of cleaning being done.

0321image001

(Right to left)trike,rxs100,rgv125,runner180,three honda frames,nrg50,three very rusty honda pressed steel frames, two cb650’s,xt350,runner125, pile of rs125’s and spare car tires. Theses are the good ones we kept. Saved the runner 125 because it’s front fork should fit the nrg50, and the left over engine case and frame will be a good starting point for any runner 180 mods.

0321image002

loncin 107cc, the next big honda 50 steptru rally is about 2 months away, guess what engine ted will be wheeling about in? also he promised to help push on with that nsr/trike thing.

0321image003

I planted a tree!

0321image004

Hope it survies.

0321image005

Saved from scrapman, rg80 foot rest converted to work on a rxs100.

0321image006

Can you spot it yet?

0321image007

How about now?

0321image008

yep rgv125, this one i had and aircooled rd375 engine fitted, but back in the day i had no way of makeing the exhausts fit.

0321image009

Whipped off the front end, saveing it for a future project.

0321image011

Garden Cleared! the metal here filled an entire 4 axle 12 wheel truck. and the place still looks like shite.

0321image012

So garden done for now, back to work, Sarges bike complied bastarding clutch broke.

0321image013

Undid the whole front end, I seem to remember sarge fitting new head bearings. either he only did the top one or he just never actually put any grease on it.

0321image014

Don’t like the old rg80 foot rest arrangement.

0321image015

Chopped it all up and straighted the peg. ran out of time to do the other side.

So there, i’ve updated,  ya happy now steve? 😛
