playing with cbr’s

The other day we started up the “left in the rain for 10 years” cbr6, exhaust was full of muck.

Took some cleaning up, even got my helmet.

So yesterday, decided to re-stealth my own cbr6, why? i’m back delivering pizza, need monies. Anyway stainless F3 can wont fit so i chopped up the mount tab and made it fit.

Next up was a better box, took it apart for measurements. dirty huh?

Ex-school tables to the rescue again. you can see what i did to the F3 pipe here too.

Lobster backed and fish mouthed the side support bar. Serious engineering terms i kid you not.

All done now, just waiting for the paint to dry, the least fun part of any project. Will have the road test on friday night, it’ll be perfect or the pizzas will end up all over the road. right after the turn up for Clarkes hill. at about 8:35.

I has brakes!!!

Well it turned out that the bajaj shoe adjustment is done by the handbrake cable, no flipping auto adjustment! still spongy but it stops well, also it seems the holes in the floor have another use; light for when your working underneath 🙂

won’t run now, figging carb.

Next i might have to go back to delivering pizza for extra money, so the cbr got a look over. Found a foot hanger that has a raised fulcrum point for better gear changes. It was in the scrap pile, looked brand new.

after some research it turned out it was an f3 hanger, and nope i didn’t have a f3 gear change lever. So i tried to make a new pivot brush, that didn’t turn out so clever, the lose brush i found was 0.17mm too big and after half an hour of filing i gave up.

So the lever i needed had to be 10mm spaced out, much easier to make then the blasted pivot.

needed a longer adjustment bar, rg125f to the rescue, 2secs in the vice to straighten it out.

On it goes, gear change has improved! thank fook, i would like a longer adjustment bar but thats a bugger to make, may just buy an f3 lever some time in the future, maybe if i make some money lol.

Jobs over

Made about 70 baskets and they were all gone in one night. spine is wrecked from bending over them.

This cbr6 is looking like it will never return to the road in a nice condition, so fingers crossed i get my paws on it and turn it into a dual sport for the Mongolian trip..

Today i put the 115 main jet in the runners PWK carb, couldn’t take it for a spin since i didn’t have any rain gear, but loading it on the rear brake and a quick spin on the gravel out to the back and there was no bogging and felt like there was a lot more power to, didn’t sound ‘wet’ or rich so finger crossed for the classic spin this sunday.

hopefully more updates soon, not a lot done recently.

more bajaj brakes

Well, the old holding down the lever didn’t work so i cracked on with the nipples, which didn’t work either (5/16 size for those interested) further inspection revealed the sexy aluminium drums (well when there clean..) and the fact the rear wheels can be reversed easy like if i need it to be much wider.

So i pointed the blame at the slave cylinders, and i was right! the rubber sleeves had disintegrated and water was left in, created rust and muck just where you don’t need it, clean them up and no joy, bigger 14mm master cylinder bunged on, will weld that up next week.

Tzr250 3ma oil pumps, the short one is the earlier correct for mine one and the long one is in suspect condition as well, bum hats.

I’ve been trying to talk my self out of doing this for a few months now, but the little voice in the back of my head got a tiny foot hold and told me it was okay to make up a photochop, the idea is now fully formed and raging about the place now..

Check the foot peg placement, totally doable, the air box will fit under the seat, a new subframe and tank will have to be made up to go under the seat, a wider seat will have to be made (about 2″) and the bars will need massive risers, i’ll be on tippy toes where ever i stop.

cbr6 servicing

Going to the munster 100 on sunday, so though i’d better get the cbr ready.
Lost all my keys the other day so had to chop off the disc lock, that was fun…

filter didn’t wanna come off, the houseing did but the threaded lower part didn’t, got it off in the end with a punch and hammer, champion 306 filter, now it’s got the old faithful HF303.

at 44630, it’s a bit past that last service, but despite the crack (small stone hit it) the filter got almost straight away it still had almost 4 litres of oil inside.

will i ever finish a project?

Finally got around to balancing the cbr carbs, massive difference, much more bottom end pull and smoother then a cream covered 16 year old.

The last couple of days have been spent getting teds r1 up to speed for a trackday, don’t it look very professional? utter fluke that seans tyre warmer were blue.

All that trackday work, was fun, but it was giving ted ideas, he suggested getting seans (mums really)rs250 going and take that, don’t think i’d be happy trashing someone elses fragile two-stroke around, the tzr250 3ma? nope that’s leading a pampered life as an investment piece. the high mileage cbr6? missing all the engine spacers, a fork leg and some decent disc’s, plus i fear it would be expensive to fix after a proper blow up (inevitable really) and it needs a decent 160 rear tyre, which i’d just have to buy. the gsxf600 teapot? there’s more of it there but a lot of it is corroded, new forks, new shock odd size wheels.. What’s left the runner? rxs? four star moped? not quite fast enough. The rgv125? just need loads of welding, can chop off loads of road stuff, only expense is decent hh brake pad (only two not four like the others!) and some second hand 125 slicks. Least if i fall off that thing nobody’s gonna cry.

Now if i could just remember where i put it…

Little updates

Went to sarges wedding, only took this photo cause the left hand painting annoyed me..

Finally decided to clean the carbs on the cbr

went quite well was expecting them to be utter bastards to put back on, but no they just poped on.

Was gonna mod the airbox then, but discovered i don’t have have two exactly the same ones to mod, not even certain what year cbr use’s that lid..

Garage all chopped up now.

Chunk taken out of my side 🙁 but i am getting a 20″x12″ container out the back 🙂

spotted this fzr600 at the vjmc meet on sunday, feeling the hankering for a new bike god help me.

Choke cable

step 1: remove entire bike…

there it is just under the right hand coil, totally seized. when this new cable stops moving I’ll rig up a cable that is just pulled out the side.

didn’t have the tools to properly clean the carbs so i left that till some other time, still wondering what to do with the airbox, I have a spare lid so i can experiment with one and still be able to return to stock.

Perhaps if i remove the bell mouth of the snorkel, the sharp edge might add a bit of induction noise. Must have a look at some mid 90’s kawasaki airbox’s there known for a proper induction roar.

cbr mods

Looks like the runner is leaking fuel, so i decided to swap back to the cbr. Tried to get the fuel out of the runners tank, que gob full of petrol and then i only got 2 litre out as well, it’s a weird tank shape can’t get the pipe in far enough. Been thinking of ways to give the cbr more character, decided i needed a louder pipe and i should sort the jetting. I’ve always avoided loud pipes as it attracts guards but these days I’m not so fast any more. Not sure what pipe i’ll put on,we have a dented cbr straight thu pipe(chrome) i’d love to make the haybusa’s left hand carbon pipe fit but that’s a suzuki bolt on type, not slip on. So in the mean time i couldn’t remember weather i had de-baffled the stock pipe before, hmm, do it any way!

Success! pretty nice sound out of it, unfortunately i can’t hear it anymore when there is any wind speed, perhaps some airbox mods to bring in some induction roar? have to pop the tank off anyway to clean the pilot jets anyway, could do two birds with one stone and rejet to suit a modded airbox too.

cbr6 is it rat now?

little update to the cbr6,

been driving around for ages with out the nose, and yesterday i decided to hack it up and paint it and slap it on.

I’ve yet to get used to it, i may paint the screen magnoila too.

front edge of the right tooth is a little dodgy, an angle grinder is not a precision tool.

I like how the red flows from the frame to the nose, but a black surrounding the nose looks a little awkward, meh when it stops raining and the light is better i will take photos and plonk it on ratbike.org, pity that site doesn’t have comments, i’d be the outcast of the outcast community 🙂
