More english axle woes

Even I’m sick of it now.

1212Image000

Took for ever to wind on those nuts, but i didn’t want to chop the bolts until i have seen the ride height.

1212Image000

That piece on the bottom is meant to go above the spring and below the axle, it’s too thick meant for a multi leaf spring and I’m skipping the leaf mount pads anyway, hope the spring don’t crack. If it does it’s 5-link time! also in the pic you can see the ominous bit of oil on the axle….

1212Image000

1212Image000

Man wheels! hairy chested too!

1212Image000

Matt black rustoleum not so chip resistant as a gloss.

1212Image000

Couldn’t find an axle location pin (perhaps because i kept searching for a location bolt) it matters not since im not bothering with the leaf pads. the bolts edges would tear up the rubber.

1212Image000

It’s cracked, you can’t quite see it in the pic, it’s a hairline, and i would never has seen it except for when the axle was on it’s end in the garage getting painted, it leaked a tiny bit showing it up. (sorry bout the crap pic).

saw an atlas axle in Donegal for €220, maybe i should just redo the spring mount on that and slip it in, how hard can it be?

Oh fired off and email to an ebay seller about anglia wheel cylinders, if he has what i need i’ll just fit anglia bits, or maybe i really should get that atlas.

Measurements

No pics this time, dead phone again, mostly did measuring today anyway.
quite accurate:

1034mm outer width of spring mounts(includeing 6mm jago frame)

88mm leaf bush width

934mm leaf/spring sadle center

485mm leaf eye to axle

m12 front bolts

quite dodgy:

1346mm wide axle (53″)

1220mm back plate to back plate (48″)

This stuff is from a guy named boswell, who is looking for axle info for his datsun.

the standard 120y axle is 51.5 inches (1308mm) [114.3 pcd]

MGB axle is 52 inches (1320mm) [114.3 pcd]

Ford Capri Atlas is 58 inches (1473mm) [108pcd]

Ford escort English axle is 54 inches (1371mm) [108pcd]

Ford Anglia van std axle is 50 inches (1270mm) [108pcd]

Reliant Scimitar is 53 inches (1346mm) [114.3pcd]

Axle was doing my head in until i saw his info, it must be an escort axle, with an anglia 4.44:1 diff, the brakes however are still annoying me,

Are all 8″ drums the same? I don’t like the single piston sliding thing, but if it were just that i’d live with it, it’s the imperial vs metric thats tripping me up now, are they anglia drums (imperial) or escort (metric)?

English Axle

I’m working my way through getting the rear end up off the ground, degreased the axle three times and finally painted it the other day (dead phone so no pics)

1206Image002

Now I’m trying to sort the brakes, staying with the 8″ drums because there the lightest, but I need to find out where the axle came from to sort what kinda wheel cylinders I need. 4.44:1 ratio indicates an anglia van axle and pictures on the net of anglia wheel cylinders bear this out, that makes it an imperial set-up? also the anglia cylinders are weird having a sort of one piston sliding set-up that doesn’t look like a good idea, sierra’s also use 8″ drums, but I haven’t found out if there backing plates will fit or not, keeping the eyes peeled for escort back plates on ebay.

1206Image003

The brother going raceing again and has taken out the cr250, looks quite well since it’s been stood for 5 years now, started and all with no special work needed.

1206Image004

This is what interested me, one day I’ll 4 or 5 or 6 link the rear of the jago and in the bargain add 16.8 inchs to the wheelbase (up to the 94.8 escort length) second hand motocross shocks are cheap and fully rebuild able mounted a little way up on the link arms should give the right travel, roll centers are bothering me now, low is best but then the shocks are going to be mounted high on the the upper links, would be better on the lower ones, think I’ll four link the axle and make the top ones into a A frame of sorts to control lateral movement. decisions decisions decisions.

Progress! Jago Geep

Stuff came from the man from donegal, also just got news sarge vulcan jets turned up this morning!

1112Image000

GT webber manifold

1112Image000

1112Image000

The webber it’s self, it’s got one of those dual stage throttle that I hate.

1112Image000

Had an idea, teds always complaining about his 195/50/15 tyres being to hard/low profile, so for his birthday (which i only found out about yesterday) I’ll get him some bigger tyres and I’ll get the old ones!

1112Image000

The tyre is too big to fit in the vice so it had to come off the other way. I smell of burnt rubber now.

1112Image000

9″ wide rim, 230mm wide from calculation its got a negative offset of 37.5mm, I have no idea how bad it’s gonna handle.

Will 195mm tyres fit on a 230mm rim? don’t know but I’m going to try to get the tyre shop to do it for me coz I ain’t getting the rest of those tyres off, absolute pita.

I said I was going to use 13″ wheels in the last post, but since I can manage low profile tyre’s for these 15″ I’ll try it, anyway I found out that hilux axles are about 59kg and much more available then atlas axles, perfect compromise between weight and durability.

Crossflow and Pinto dizzys

The jagos status at the mo, gonna keep the english axle but swap it for a good 3.54 and run it with 13″ wheels, use the crossflow for as long as possible then if i switch to bike power the 3.54 ought to suit it fine. The full cage idea is gonna wait, just a lowered half cage right now, with the small wheels it much less likely for me to flip it. Low low seats and maybe a floor mounted pedal box, Locost style windscreen would fit lovely on the shuttle, roof and doors can wait.

1110Image000

Pinto distributor cap on the crossflow, amazed it fit, was all set to find some megajolt stuff (still might if the engine is good) and a 36-1 trigger wheel, the crossflows cranks pulley is a bit bent and it needs an alternator a v belt and a oil cap, not much then. oil, oil filter, fan is broken, have a carb and inlet on the way in the post, need an air filter and a gasket, what else?

1110Image000

Pinto dizzy, will actually measure up the difference some other day.

Escort suspension painted

Bough a tin of rustoleum matt black paint, I quite like it, should go well with the gloss red.

1105Image000

Leaves are painted twice., Sarges bike got new front pads, no sign of the jets yet BUT I had a look at a manual for ’em and it seems the b series vulcan had 130/132 jets! maybe those 127’s won’t be enough.

1105Image000

Bush’s were a piece of piss to put together, had to use red rubber grease, which I hope won’t eat anything as I had no graphite.

1105Image000

Speakers mounted via duck tape, much tidier. thinking of doing the laptop as well, so it will match my wallet and phone.

1105Image000

More bits painted, much hammering was needed of the saddle that was used on the 50mm spring, think they tried to squash fit it.

Course over, new bits arrived.

By my reckoning I came second in class at tig welding, only discovered that I was using 10amps more then everyone else 10mins before the exam started..

1024Image000

New bits, rear leaves, front springs, rear bush’s, u bolts and a pair of grp4 top spring seats, which look like they don’t fit my springs. Anyway rally design only charged 30 for the delivery quite happy with that, not a light or small package. threw a bit of black paint on the leaves but I ran out of paint (though I had more) and this monday I will be sorting sarges vulcan 1500 (more blasted welding) but straight after that the jago chassis will be going back onto it’s wheels.

English axle strip

1008Image000

Result of some one driving around with out a pingfukit, might get away with reusing it, plenty of meat left on the shoe.

1008Image001

Looks like I have a 4.441 diff! don’t think anyone would be cruel enough to put a 4.4 tag on a 3.9 diff do ya? Anyway will probably have to rebuild it with new wheel bearings and a nose seal.

Also got the gearbox off the pinto.

The amazing disappearing belt!

1007Image000

1007Image000

1007Image000

I can’t find any belt at all, none nadda ziltch. and the one i bought on ebay is second hand and only 20.6mm wide when it should be 22mm

1007Image000

Painted bottom of chassis, next stage is to put springs back onto it and do a dry build of the major parts (body engine) so I can see what bits need chopping and welding for example the engine will need different mounts and i need to mark out the bottom of the A post for the full cage.

Loads of work done,

But not many pics to show for it, first up got Niki’s bike out the way, sorted the chain, rear brake, idle, bent handlebars and wonky head lamp.

Then moved onto the jago.

1005Image000

Font end finally off, had to angle grind off all the bolts, crossmember is in a poor state, got an oval hole TCA hole on one side and the other seized.

1005Image001

Rear axle out and filipped the frame, probably gonna rain all day tomorrow so probably no painting.

Then had to answer a call to help from frosty, blasted French car had eaten it’s own gearbox (it would be awesome if it had eaten some other cars box, but i digress) so with a diagnosis of either a wrecked clutch or cwp, we got that box out in about an hour and a half and it looks like the teeth that held onto the cv had disappeared, new gearbox time!

speaking of eating gearbox’s, dinner time!
